Pionen Nuclear Bunker Data Centre - Meeting Room

Waterfalls, suspended conference rooms, 2600-liter salt water fish tank, greenhouses and German submarine engines, the only thing missing from this amazing data centre is a white long-haired cat and a Great White. Take a look around what Pinonen employees call “just another day in the office”

Located in an old nuclear bunker in central Stockholm, Pionen’s underground data center belongs to Sweden’s largest ISP (Bahnhof) and comes complete with entrance doors 40cm thick, 1.5 megawatts of power delivered via two German Maybach MTU diesel submarine engines and a capability of withstanding a direct attack from a hydrogen bomb. You have not seen a working environment like this before!

Impressive Stats
  • A relic from the cold war, the facility was originally a military / nuclear bunker codenamed “Pionen White Mountains”;
  • Pionen redesigned the bunker in 2008 blasting away more than 4,000 cubic meters of solid rock;
  • The bunker is able to withstand a direct hit from a hydrogen bomb;
  • Backup power is delivered by two Maybach MTU diesel engines originally designed for submarines, Pionen have also installed the claxon warning systems from the original German submarine;
  • The network has full redundancy with both fiber optics and extra copper lines with three different physical ways into the mountain and one the most-connected places in northern Europe;
  • A simulated daylight environment complete with greenhouses, waterfalls and a huge 2600-litre salt water fish tank.
