WPP Drinking At Work

In an internal memo titled “alcohol and the workplace” WPP have called time on the drinks trolley culture in a bid to distance themselves from their Mad Men reputation.

The new policy highlights that firms should ensure “the safe consumption of alcohol by employees and other guests at work related events” and that “No drinks trolleys should be provided nor alcohol consumed at desks or in work areas.”

Guidelines also suggest that agencies should limit alcohol to designated areas such as dining rooms, lounges, and on-site bars, and for a restricted period of time, “generally no more than two hours” outside the workday. The memo also urged agencies to make food available, as well as free water and non-alcoholic beverages, and to respect the wishes of individuals who choose not to drink alcohol.

This comes at a time when longtime Chief Executive Martin Sorrell faces an investigation for improper behaviour and possible misuse of assets – WPP have stated the policy change is unrelated.
